Strong foundation for operation
An independent study conducted by a certified industrial hygienist of fire hoses from 10 different fires included laboratory analysis by an AIHA accredited laboratory for combustion by-products including soot, char and ash, pH, and chloride anions. Testing of the fire hoses was conducted before and after cleaning with the Fire Hose Decon machine. Each hose was run through the Fire Hose Decon one time for approximately one minute. In one minute of cleaning, there was a reduction of 97.12% chloride anions, 83.94% reduction in combustion by products and the pH returned to neutral levels. The best results are the minimized exposures to the firefighters by cleaning the hose on scene instead of loading dirty hose, unloading dirty hose, cleaning the hose with brushes and returning the hose to the truck. By cleaning the hose on scene, exposures to carcinogens are reduced by at least 67%.
The Fire Hose Decon was created to help prevent firefighters from being exposed to cancerous byproducts of firefighting through fire hoses. It also helps get firefighters back in service quicker, improve the longevity of fire hose, and keep fire trucks looking good.
The FHD was designed by a Phoenix FF/Engineer who constantly ran into issues cleaning the fire hose after every fire. The choice was to load the contaminated hose back onto the truck, take it to the fire station, unload it, power wash the fire hose, and then reload it. This method takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention that the fire truck is out of service during this period. The other option was to load the contaminated hose back onto the truck and leave it. Both options required us to take contaminated hose back to the station and be exposed to it multiple times.
The Fire Hose Decon solves all these problems. It was designed to connect the fire trucks hand line, so it can be taken anywhere the hand line can reach (up to 200ft), to clean the fire hose on scene after every fire to prevent exposure and spreading of these contaminates. Washing the hose as it’s being loaded onto the truck is a great feature, especially if you are loading the hose in a contaminated, dirty, or muddy area.
The goal was to create something that was simple to use, compact, easy to deploy, and very durable. After multiple prototypes and hours of engineering he felt he created what we sought out to create. This is the quickest and most efficient way to clean hose on scene after a fire.
